Growing skills with Toastmasters

Mentimeter interactive questionnaire showing a word cloud make up for about 30 different words written in a mix of pink blue green and black text

Recently at Boaters Toastmasters club we held a brainstorming session to help with planning for the upcoming Toastmasters’ year. Expertly facilitated by Louise Landess, Lucie Harrison and Dan Vann, club members were encouraged to contribute their thoughts through an interactive Mentimeter quiz. The results of the quiz give some great insights into why people join Toastmasters.

Many people join Toastmasters simply to grow confidence.

If being asked to stand up in front of a group of people and give a presentation results in sweaty palms, muddled words and forgetting everything you really wanted to say, then you’ve come to the right place! Toastmasters has helped thousands of people from all walks of life become confident speakers.

Some people join Toastmasters to learn how to practice giving presentations with no notes.

Do you have a goal to be able to give an inspirational keynote speech without the need for notes? Now this is a more advanced goal but the Toastmasters format can be adapted to suit almost any goal you have including becoming the hottest keynote speaker in town!

Another reason why people join Toastmasters is to practice impromptu speaking.

Have you ever been in a meeting and been asked to contribute but you didn’t feel prepared? Or do you wish that you could speak off the cuff without so many filler words like ums and ahs? The impromptu speaking practice that Toastmasters provides is invaluable for anyone with this goal.

There are so many things you can learn at Toastmasters—storytelling, using vocal variety, body language, humour, increasing your vocabulary and the list goes on!

Everyone who joins Toastmasters sets their own personal goals and works to achieve them with the support and guidance of other members.
