Idiosyncrasies, Mentors, and Milo

Book - Lesson from my teachers by Sarah Ruhl

Theme: Idiosyncrasies

This week’s meeting theme, brought to us by Jacqui, was “Idiosyncrasies.” And what a wonderful theme it turned out to be.
Throughout the meeting, we got to discover everyone’s little quirks, habits, pet peeves, and peculiarities. The room was filled with relatable moments, light-hearted laughter, and the kind of warm humour that reminds you why Toastmasters is such a special place to grow. We discovered our president Lucie’s evening ritual of 3 gin…ger biscuits and Stu’s appreciation for a good Milo.

Self-efficacy

Shaun broke down the steps of self-efficacy in his speech while also experimenting with new speaking techniques himself: stepping away from the lectern and using small cue notes in hand instead. A good reminder that growth often happens while we are still figuring things out in real time.

Ice Breaker

Kent delivered his Ice Breaker speech; a thoughtful and beautifully told story about how he became the person he is today. His speech explored identity, change, and the idea that we are never fully “finished.” We are always becoming, continuously writing and rewriting who we are.

In front, behind, alongside – mentorship

Louise’s speech, “In front, behind, alongside,” focused on mentorship. She reflected on the people who had helped shape her thinking and encouraged her growth over the years — from an English teacher to a former boss. What stood out was her observation that there is always something to learn from one another. Her mentorship now comes less from single individuals and more from wider communities and shared conversations.

We were also very happy to welcome Aaron back after some time away, thumbs-up energy included, and to welcome guest Ben to the meeting.

In true Louise fashion, when a free speech slot appeared late last week, she jumped in to help.
“Repetition beats perfection, so if there’s a free spot for speeches, I’ll take it.”
We have been warned.

Table Topics

During Table Topics, we learned about Tsarina’s love for coffee, while our newer member Cyrus shared his passion for sustainability and Ying told us a story highlight how resource-saving might be the little warning signs that come with her personality!

The speeches delivered on Friday were notably well structured, thoughtful, and authentic. More than anything, the evening felt like a celebration of individuality ; the small idiosyncrasies that make each speaker memorable, relatable, and unmistakably themselves.

Until next Friday!
