Jeremy opened as Sergeant at Arms talking about his first job picking up stones on the farm, which “put hairs on his chest”.
Christian, as Toastmaster talks about his first job cleaning tiles in the toilet with a toothbrush – understandably, he didn’t last there long.
Tsarina, our Grammarian, had worked firstly boiling chickens for a Dairy. She provided us with options of te reo Māori words that we could use, and encouraged this with a packet of jetplane sweets for the winner. The challenge was on with Lucie taking out the prize.
Introducer 1 was Cyrus who had started delivering newspapers which was hard work. She introduced Stuart with his speech about the Coast to Coast “Doing It For Pleasure”.
Stu used skills gained from his Physiology/Psychology Degree and mountain bike riding when he was younger to train for the Coast to Coast. His training has started with 2 runs and 2 bike rides/wee. Stu spoke of the benefits – Health, Fitness, Achievement, Exploring the South Island, charity and fundraising, being outside and Bragging Rights!
Louise introduced our second speaker, Roy Knight, from Aranui Toastmasters who was invited along to present a tutorial on the Humorous Speech Contest (having originally offered to deliver one on another topic).
Roy’s first job was very lucrative, finding lost golf balls and reselling them. He showed us how he used his Dyslexic/ ADHD Superpowers and advised us to “stick with our strengths”. His opening woke us all up and scared the living daylights out of some of us. He stressed the need for a good opening, body and conclusion using exaggeration, hooks and repetition to tell a story. Using a real story that you are part of helps as you can add links to what happened. Roy aims to finish his speech at 6 minutes 30 seconds so that he has time for his conclusion.

Hannah, evaluating Stu, had first worked at a Supermarket. She gave an excellent evaluation, a mini Speech which was awarded the Toastie of the Day.
Aaron had the challenging role of evaluating Roy’s 20 minute Tutorial. His first job was delivering newspapers.
Ying evaluated Tabletopics, Lucie was General Evaluator and Hayley Timer. Thomas, as AV/Tech/Zoom excelled by providing an electronic slide of Tsarina’s Maori Words rapidly for her grammarian role.
