Today’s Toastmasters meeting was all about being spontaneous! Fittingly, our theme was “Random”, with members drawing their meeting roles from a hat, ensuring no one knew what role they’d be taking until the meeting began. Louise did a fantastic job stepping into the Toastmaster role and keeping the meeting flowing despite the unpredictable start.

Cyrus introduced our Word of the Day – “Spontaneous”, encouraging everyone to weave it naturally into their speeches and evaluations throughout the meeting.

We were treated to three entertaining and thought-provoking prepared speeches:

• Ben introduced Helen McLeod, who presented “Highly Spontaneous”, exploring the value of embracing life’s unexpected moments.
• Hayley introduced Ying, whose speech “Declutter for Well-being”highlighted how simplifying our surroundings can lead to a calmer mind and a happier life.
• Christian introduced Dan Van with “The Art of Being Unprepared”, proving that sometimes the best moments come when things don’t go exactly to plan.

Our Table Topics Master, Aaron, certainly kept everyone on their toes with a series of creative impromptu questions:

• Shaun shared a spontaneous moment he was embarrassed by before turning his response into a heartfelt farewell. As Shaun prepares to leave the club, we wish him all the very best and thank him for everything he’s contributed. We’ll miss you, Shaun!
• Natalie tackled the topic of whether she preferred being random or organised.
• Ian was asked to tell us about one of the 300,000 itemsin his home, resulting in plenty of laughs.
• Hayley imagined creating her own Scottish clan, sharing its name and what it would become famous for.
• Christian was handed a completely random object, a glue stick, and challenged to speak about it on the spot.
• Thomas wrapped up the session by sharing his thoughts on the letter “M“, proving that almost anything can become an interesting speech with a little creativity.

The evaluation session rounded out another valuable meeting, with:

• Ben evaluating Helen’s speech.
• Ian evaluating Ying’s speech.
• Aaron evaluating Dan Van’s speech.
• Dan evaluating the Table Topics session.
• Erika serving as General Evaluator.
• Thomas keeping everyone on track as Overall Timer.

Today’s meeting was a great reminder that confidence isn’t about always being perfectly prepared, it’s about trusting yourself to adapt when the unexpected happens. Whether speaking from the lectern or answering an impromptu question, our members showed that a little spontaneity can lead to some of the most memorable moments.
