Have you ever wondered what type of leader you are?
Or better yet what you resting heart rate is, while watching a loved one clamour up a ladder to do somewhat unnecessary but appreciated hedge grooming…
All this and more happens down at the local Boaters Club every Friday, and last week’s meeting featured three informative speeches that gave me plenty to discuss with my colleagues at the water cooler.
Dean McLeod spoke on growing old gracefully, how the smaller things in life become the things we appreciate and notice. Time becomes a sort of cycle, we are children who discover things -bit by bit, dazzled by the simple things and growing older is a rediscovering of sorts. Life slows a little and we can find pleasure in the smaller things again.
What small things are you appreciating at the moment?
I’m appreciating all the dogs I get to meet on my weekend walks. This is Dotti from Rapaki on Sunday.

Lucie Harrison led a great speech talking about leadership! I learnt she values authenticity while leaning into the DISC method to figure out your strengths and weaknesses. Knowing these about yourself and others can provide a more impactful way to lead and truly connect with those around you.

After the meeting I went away and learnt that I cover both dominant and influence sides of the disc… apparently not surprising to my boss when I told him this after spearheading the world cup sweepstakes in the office this week and forcing everyone to take part!…Go Germany…
Christian Trousselot whose name hails from France (Loved the intro Stuart), showing us that less heart beats will equal more life.
Simple messaging but oh so effective, that the beats per minute of your heart directly correlate to your heart health and that simply 30 minutes of cardio, 3 times a week along with a bloody good night’s sleep can reduce your risk of dying of heart related complications!
So, get out there on the trails folks! I wonder if my triple shot long black counts as a heart rate raising workout…
And the thread through Fridays meeting slowly appears… being authentic and looking after yourself will hopefully let us grow old gracefully so we can enjoy our ice skating or bowling or whatever simple pleasure floats your boat. Hopefully everyone got out and about and enjoyed some of the weekend sun – maybe you managed to tick off one of the many things to do about Christchurch!
