Is a Hot Dog a Sandwich?
Our meeting on 27 February 2026 was a whirlwind of energy, ideas, and just the right amount of quirky debate, because what’s a Boaters Toastmasters meeting without a little existential pondering about hot dogs?
Toastmaster
We kicked things off with Erika, our Toastmaster for the day, bursting in with energy and enthusiasm. She not only introduced everyone but also reminded us why we keep coming back: for the laughs, the learning, and the occasional philosophical question about food.
Grammarian
Kent, our Grammarian, kept us sharp with the word of the day: “Elevate”.If anyone needed inspiration, just look at your average table topics speaker, heights of eloquence achieved, perhaps even elevated beyond our expectations.

Speaker
Speaking of speeches, Royden set the bar high with “Time to Talk About the C Word”.
No, not that one, he dove into the fascinating world of cults, leaving us equally informed and slightly unnerved.
Welcome to Mrs Featherbottom

Alana brought along her special guest, Mrs Featherbottom, a “tiny toy duck”, to introduce a wellness challenge.
It turns out, having a duck on your desk really elevates your mood, science may not back it yet, but we’re convinced.
Table Topics and Participants
, Our Table Topics Master, tasked us with taking risks, because what better way to embrace risk than standing in front of a room full of people and answering whatever question lands in your lap?
Questions flew fast and fabulous:
- Alana: “What fictional place would you like to go to?” (Her humour had us all quacking with laughter.)
- Louise: “What is the meaning of life?” (Big question, small time limit!)
- Warren (our guest): “Is it more important to do what you love or love what you do?”
- Jeremy: “Is a hot dog a sandwich?” (Clearly, the most important question of the evening. Verdict: still hotly debated.)
- Aaron: “If you had a whole year to travel, where would you go?”
Other gems included: “Would you rather be the most intelligent person or the most fun person in the room?” and “What piece of advice has changed your perspective on life?”
Every answer was unique, funny, and thought-provoking, proof that Toastmasters isn’t just about speeches, it’s about daring to ask the weird questions, take the stage, and maybe even redefine the meaning of a sandwich.
By the end of the morning, we weren’t just elevated in vocabulary; we were elevated in spirit. And as for the hot dog question? Let’s just say the debate continues… and so it should.
So, fellow Toastmasters, next time someone asks, “Is a hot dog a sandwich?”, remember: it’s not about the answer, it’s about having the courage to stand up, take risks, and speak your mind.
